When you think of historic homes in the western New Jersey, chances are, top real estate agent in New Jersey Maureen Donohue-Conway comes to mind. As the resident expert in historic properties for Warren, Hunterdon, and Morris Counties, she not only has the expertise, but the passion, as well.

“Think of the stories that exist within those walls,” she said. “Someone could have come back from the Civil War and light a fire in one of the fireplaces.”

To Maureen, the historic homes offer not just history but also a level of quality that you can’t find in newer construction.

“We have a tendency to knock things down,” she said. “But consider the workmanship that went into every detail from the doors that are solid wood, the gingerbread trim and the columns. You couldn’t afford to have someone do this for you today, especially the stone workmanship.”

Maureen’s commitment to preserving homes also extends to the community surrounding her. She believes New Jersey is a great state with much to offer, and it’s to everyone’s benefit to preserve and protect and keep the surrounding green space.

“I’m not a fan of sprawl and would much rather see revitalization of cities,” she said. “All the infrastructure is already there, from the roads to the grids. It just makes sense.”

A self-described nature-lover,  Maureen enjoys her rural community that offers 60 to 70 miles of horse farms, green space, and mountains.

“People are in awe of how pretty it is,” she said. “New Jersey is a small state, but a lot of people don’t even know it’s out here.”

According to Maureen, the market is picking up, thanks to good inventory and better rates.

“There’s a misperception that inventory is low, and there’s nothing out there,” she said. “But that’s because homes that are new and priced right are selling right away.”

Maureen believes one of the secrets to her success is making true connections. She makes an effort to get to know her clients and their families and as a result, forms lasting friendships. With many of her clients, she is considered part of the the family and is often invited to weddings and birthday parties.

Maureen is also brings a lot of internet marketing savvy to the table. When buyers do a search for “Historic Homes in New Jersey,” her website is one of the first to pop up.

“The days of putting an ad in the paper are over,” she said. “And niche marketing and branding do make a difference.”

Her success with search engine optimization not only brings in interested clients, but also media sources seeking her expertise. In fact, she was recently contacted by a representative at HGTV, who had found her online and was looking for an expert on historic homes.

All of this work has paid off for Maureen, as the last few years have been the best yet. Last year, she earned the Circle of Excellence Sales Award from the New Jersey Association of Realtors and is on-track to receive it again.

When Maureen isn’t hard at work, she enjoys taking classes, hiking, and going to all the nearby State and Federal Parks. She also believes in giving back and regularly donates to Children’s Miracle Network of Hospitals.
